Spiritual Care Volunteer Training
at ClinicalChaplaincy.org
Compassionate presence.
Clear boundaries.
The right resource for the right need.
OVERVIEW
Spiritual care volunteers can offer companionship, listening, and compassionate presence—when their role is clear and their preparation matches their responsibilities.
This program equips volunteers to care well without asking them to function as professional chaplains.
Grounded in the Right Resource Model, the training emphasizes empathy, cultural and spiritual humility, healthy boundaries, recognition of spiritual distress, and knowing when and how to refer someone to a professional chaplain or another appropriate resource.
Participants complete 16 hours of structured instruction followed by 4 hours of supervised application and consultation.
• Format: Eight two-hour sessions or sixteen one-hour sessions.
• Who it is for: Current and prospective spiritual care volunteers serving in healthcare, hospice, community, and faith-based settings.
• Materials: A comprehensive Participant Manual, guided exercises, and supporting resources.
• Institutional implementation: ClinicalChaplaincy.org can deliver an organization’s first cohort and help designated staff prepare to offer subsequent cohorts locally.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS LEARN
The curriculum develops practical skills for offering spiritual care within a clearly defined volunteer role. Participants learn to listen with attention and empathy; honor diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural perspectives; respond appropriately to grief, illness, loss, and uncertainty; maintain confidentiality and healthy boundaries; and work responsibly within an institutional care system.
Particular attention is given to recognizing when a person’s needs exceed the volunteer’s role and require referral to a professional chaplain or another qualified resource. The goal is not to turn volunteers into chaplains, but to prepare them to become trustworthy members of a well-designed spiritual care program.
BRING THE PROGRAM TO YOUR ORGANIZATION
ClinicalChaplaincy.org works with healthcare, hospice, community, and faith-based organizations to develop volunteer spiritual care that is compassionate, appropriately bounded, and integrated with professional care.
We can deliver an organization’s initial cohort, consult on volunteer roles and referral pathways, and prepare designated staff to continue offering the program locally. Training is arranged through organizational partnerships rather than open individual enrollment.
